Tanzanite

In 1967 Tanzanite was discovered in Northern Tanzania, East Africa. Tanzanite is only found in East Africa. It is blue, surrounded by a fine hint of purple. Tanzanite usually has rich purple overtones.

Tanzanite in its rough state is usually a reddish brown color. It requires artificial heat treatment to 600 °C in a gemological oven to bring out the blue violet of the stone.

The name tourmaline comes from the singhalese word “tura mali”.In translation , this means something like stone with mixed colors , referring to the color spectrum of this gemstone.

Black tourmaline (schorl )is the most common variety . but there are also other varieties , such as the blue (indicolite ) , red (rubellite ), green , brown , and white . the red and green varieties when tranparent are valued as jewels . the green tourmalin has been increasing in popularity in recent years.

Multi – colored and bi- colored tourmaline crystals are fairly common. Crystals may be green at one end pink at the other , or green on the outside and pink inside : this type is called watermelon tourmaline some forms of tourmaline are dichroic , which menas that when thy are viewed from different directions , they change color.

According to an old Egyption legend the tourmaline , on its long journey from the center of the Earth , passed over a rainbow . That is what gave this stone its variety of colors.

Tourmaline is the gemstone of love and friendship . it is said to render them firm and long -lasting.

Tourmaline is found almost all over the world . there have been finds in Tanzania , Mozambique, Zimbabwe , Nigeria , Brazil , Madagascar, Sri Lanka , kenya, Afghanistan , Pakitsna , and South and South -west Africa.California and Maine in the United States are aslso sources for tourmaline.
