The most appealing characteristic of moonstone is its enchanting play of light. It’s name is derived from that mysterious shimmer which always looks different when the stone is moved and is known as a phenomenon called ‘adularescence’.  People believed they could recognise in it the crescent and waning phases of the moon in the stone.

Moonstone is a member of the mineral feldspar and is actually composed of two feldspar species.  Moonstone, an opalescent stone, has a wide range of colors such as orange, blue, green, pink, yellow, brown or gray with a silver scheen.  It can also be colorless.  The classical moonstone from Sri Lanka is almost transparent with a bluish shimmer.

In Roman times it was  believed that the light of the moon formed moonstone.

The moonstone symbolises our being in its entirety.

In the Indian culture, moonstone is a sacred gem.  It is believed to arouse passion and to protect women and children.

It is believed that moonstone helps in protecting against sun stoke, nose  bleeds, and epilepsy.  This shimmering gem is also used to calm emotions and cure headaches.

Germany, Brazil, Mexico, India, Myanmar, Madagascar, Tanzania  Sri Lanka, and the United States are the main sources for moonstone.
